Apple’s MagSafe Battery Pack doesn’t provide a lot of juice, but it sure is nice to use

The new Apple MagSafe Battery Pack is designed specifically for iPhones. It is elegant compared to Anker’s battery, but it doesn’t provide as much charge as many will need.

Anker also offers a 26800mAh option, without wireless charging, for 70$. I would gladly take the non wireless if it meant I could charge my phone 9 times instead of ~.5 times (in my case).

Apple designer 1 - Hey, I think we should make a portable external battery! Apple design team - but those already exist? Designer 1 - yeah, but this one will have an Apple logo, cost $100, hold less charge, and attach to the back with a magnet that works best with a separate accessory that we’ll also sell. Designer 2 - we can tell people it’s MagSafe, because people already trust our MagSafe MacBook chargers and pay $80 for them! Plus, safe is a good keyword. Team - *clapping in greedy unison*

OMFG YOU ARE ALL USING IT WRONG! Here’s how to get the most out of the pack: have both the phone and the pack fully charged. Attack the pack to the phone. Once the phone drops to 90%, the MagSafe pack will turn on and trickle charge it and keep it at 90%. This is where the pack shines: it will keep your phone at 90% for 8-12 hours depending on use. THIS IS HOW ITS SUPPOSED TO BE USED!

Lmao, I love how we've been using MAH to measure size, but now Apple wants to make people think that we've been doing it wrong and now have to look at WH instead. Fun fact, after doing all the math of WH and seeing how much it actually charges the phone, you end up with damn near the same graph as you would if you did MAH from the start.

    • Johnathan Blackwell

      Johnathan Blackwell

      9 दिवसांपूर्वी

That’s because it is the wrong way to measure it. Anything non phone related, think Power tools or laptops, they are measured in WH. MAh is only good when batteries are the same voltage.

    • T S

      T S

      12 दिवसांपूर्वी

@SweCreations lol basically all batteries use mAh and Ah. You must be new to this? I’ll explain it, batteries will have a voltage rating (car batteries and boat batteries are very common examples because there is a minimum voltage needed to turn the engine. Household aa and aaa batteries typically 1.5v to 9v which is all standard and displayed) that is then used with the mAh (the most common measurement used) to get wH. Now I know maximum output (volts) and maximum charge (mAh) to find out maximum run time (wH). If someone gives me just wH I wouldn’t know the voltage or mah. That’s like giving me the area of a rectangle and assuming I will know the side lengths when it’s infinitely variable. Exactly why most BATTERIES use mAh because the current may not always be a constant voltage.

    • SweCreations

      12 दिवसांपूर्वी

It's true though, like for real, mah is stupid, because how much energy stored is mah x volt, so you can't know how much energy a device stores from mah if you don't know what voltage it runs at. Watt hours (wh) is a much better unit regardless, and car batteries, laptop batteries, and practically everything that isn't phones and power banks (for phones) doesn't use mah because it means nothing without the voltage it's running at.

    • Nathan

      28 दिवसांपूर्वी

@Stonks Agent Apple has “optimized” charging but it only turns on when it predicts your phone will be plugged in for long periods of time, such as overnight. This extra battery pack will continuously charge your phone up to 100% and maintain it. Apple says “when your iPhone remains at full charge for prolonged periods of time, battery health can be affected.”

    • Stonks Agent

      Stonks Agent

"The important number is watt hours" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 No it's mAh. And the two are just different measurements for the same thing. That's like saying, "so this phone has a 7 inch display, but don't stress too much the important number is centimeters"

    • Piotruś

Not really, inch and cm is just a different unit for the same, Wh is the total energy amount while mAh only refers to the capacity, you could have the battery at a lower or higher voltage with the same capacity and vastly different energy amount, thus charge capability.

  87. Aperture Science

    Aperture Science

Watt-hours are the exact same as mAh when talking about batteries (different when charging is mixed into the calculation because of voltage conversion). A li-ion battery has a nominal voltage of 3.7v. 3.7v * capacity in Ah = capacity in Wh. Assuming 100% efficiency, which is definitely not the case, it would charge an iPhone 12 to 50% exactly. Bestest of cases scenario. Not gonna happen in the real world.

Apple always comes up with newer ways to make more money out of their customers who solely buy products coz they have brand value. Just look at that product it doesn't charge fast. Doesn't even stick properly to the back. But yet people go ahead and buy it. Power of brand value
